- Dr Shanker Pasupathy is a general surgeon with a special interest in keyhole surgery for obesity and metabolic disorders, as well as gastroesophageal conditions, gallbladder and abdominal hernia.
- Dr Shanker pioneered the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (removal of a portion of the stomach) and laparoscopic gastric bypass (creating a pouch in the stomach) at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in 2008. As a firm believer in collaboration, he also established the metabolic-bariatric surgery service at the Department of Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery in the hospital.
- He is the president of the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS), a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and an international faculty member at the Asian Institute of Telesurgery (AITS) in Taiwan. He has also been regularly invited to conduct workshops in keyhole surgery locally and overseas.
