Spinal Care at StarMed
Back and neck pain are the most common orthopaedic problems worldwide. It affects 80% of the population and can cause significant disability. Neck and back pain can be caused by poor sitting or working posture, injuries. Cancer may also be a cause of neck and back pains for patients who experience pain while resting or at night. If you experience pain, numbness or pins and needles in the upper or lower limbs, you should also be screened for nerve impingement.
Common Spinal Issues
Most commonly affects the lower back (lumbar spine). 95% involved lumbar 4/5 or lumbar 5/sacral1. The highest incidence for this condition is among patients who are in their 40s and 50s. Males are affected 3 times more than females. The slipped disc can cause nerve irritation, leading to pain, numbness, pins and needles or weakness over the lower limbs.
Common symptoms include:
- Mechanical low back pain
- Low back pain worse on bending forward
- Lower limbs symptoms (nerve irritation)
- Numbness
- Pins and needles
- Weakness
What can you do about it?
- Rest, activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications
- Physiotherapy
- MRI spine
- Nerve root injection
- We can perform the injection in our StarMed Operating Theatre using an X-Ray machine
- Steroids and pain killers will be injected directly around the nerve for symptoms control
- Surgery – laminotomy and discectomy
- Small incision operation to remove slipped disc
